ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA

Abstract:
India is a rich country in terms of its natural resources. It has rich-quality of soil, green forest, rivers, and plenty of mineral deposits. But the ongoing process of development in India has created a huge amount of pressure on these natural resources. It has adversely affected the health and well-being of people. Air pollution, water contamination, soil erosion, deforestation, and the disappearance of wildlife are some of the most serious environmental concerns in India. Degradation of the environment starts when pollution created by human beings exceeds the absorptive capacity of the environment. Under such a situation, the environment will fail to sustain life. The result is an environmental crisis that the whole world is experiencing today. There are three main reasons for the environmental crisis in developing countries like India.
The high growth rate of the population has created different types of environmental pollution problems in India.
Highly luxurious living, high rates of consumption, and high standards of production processes have put huge pressure on two important functions of the environment, viz. supply of resources and assimilation of wastes.
Many of the natural resources have already been extinct and the wastes generated from production and consumption have exceeded the absorptive capacity of the environment.
