Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor has it been before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor). The manuscript must be free from plagiarism.
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Follow JESS guidelines (acceptable file type: MSWord above 2007 version).
  • The submission must include a concise title, names, affiliations, Orcid Ids of all authors and email address of the corresponding author.
  • Abstract should be stand-alone without any citation.
  • Manuscript Format: Follow JESS guidelines (acceptable file type: MSWord above 2007 version).
  • Provide 4–6 keywords for the purpose of increasing the visibility and discoverability of the manuscript.
  • Figures and Tables must be numbered sequentially, captioned, and cited properly within the text. Figures must be in high-resolution images/illustrations/diagrams.
  • Ensure all references are cited and include DOIs (If available).
  • Add acknowledgement after the conclusion section.
  • Add ethical, conflict of interest, data availability, funding and Author contribution statements after Acknowledgement.
  • Provide supplementary materials as additional data/files if required (if applicable).
  • Permissions: Attach permissions for reused or previously published content.

Welcome to the Journal of Engineering, Science and Sustainability (JESS). Please follow these instructions carefully when preparing your manuscript for submission. These instructions will ensure we have everything required so your paper can move through peer review, production and publication smoothly. Please take the time to read and follow them as closely as possible, as doing so will ensure your paper matches the journal's requirements.

  1. Scope of the Journal

JESS publishes original research, reviews, communications and case studies/reports that address engineering, scientific advancements, and sustainable solutions. Manuscripts should emphasize innovation, applicability, and contributions to the fields of sustainability, science, and engineering.

  1. Manuscript Types

Original Research Articles: Up to 10,000 words, excluding references.

Review Articles: Comprehensive summaries of a specific topic (word count flexible).

Short Communications: Brief, high-impact studies (up to 3,000 words).

Case Studies: Detailed investigations of specific cases (up to 5,000 words).

  1. Preparation of Manuscripts

General Formatting

Language: All submissions must be in English.

Software: Manuscripts should be submitted in Microsoft Word 2017 onwards.

Page Layout: Use A4 with 1-inch margins on all sides.

Font: Times New Roman, size 12.

Line Spacing: Single-spaced.

Page Numbers: Include page numbers on all pages.

Structure

Title Page:

  • Title of the manuscript (concise and descriptive).
  • Full names of all authors, including affiliations.
  • Corresponding author’s email address.

Abstract: Maximum of 300 words, summarizing the purpose, methods, results, and implications.

Keywords: 4-6 keywords for indexing purposes.

Introduction: Outline the context, objectives, and significance of the study.

Materials and Methods: Detailed methodology for reproducibility.

Results and Discussion: Presentation of findings with tables, figures, and statistical analyses. Interpretation of results, implications, and limitations.

Conclusion: Brief summary of key findings and future directions.

Acknowledgement: Mention Acknowledgement here.

Funding: Mention funding source(s).

  1. Figures and Tables

Figures: Submit high-resolution images (300 dpi or higher) in JPEG, PNG, or TIFF formats (within the text).

Tables: Submit as editable text, not as images (within the text).

Captions: Provide clear and descriptive captions for all figures and tables.

  1. References

Follow the Harvard citation style. Use numbered references in square brackets, e.g., [1], [2] in the text. Examples:

  1. Submission Process

Platform: All submissions must be made via the journal’s online submission system ONLY.

File Types: Submit a single manuscript file with embedded figures and tables for initial review.

Supplementary Material: Upload additional materials (e.g., datasets) as separate files.

  1. Peer Review Process

All manuscripts undergo a rigorous peer review process.

Typical review time is 4-6 weeks.

Revisions should be resubmitted after peer-review comments.

Manuscripts are published only after finalization following the dissemination of peer-review comments.

  1. Ethics and Compliance

Author Responsibilities

Originality: Ensure that the work is original and has not been published elsewhere.

Authorship: Include only those who made significant contributions to the work.

Ethical Guidelines

Adhere to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines.

Obtain necessary permissions for copyrighted material.
